چکیده

In this paper, we summarize our prior work on exerting organizational influence on a decision-theoretic agent by replacing components of its Dec-POMDP model. We show how replacing various components can correspond to different prior notions of organizational control, and summarize the impact that different replacements can have on the quality and overhead of coordinated behavior. The innovation of this paper is then presented, which is a principled methodology for organizational influence to be modeled as a partial, factored specification of a DecPOMDP component, and for overlaying this onto (rather than simply replacing) an agent’s pre-existing local component specification. By doing so, organizational influences can better complement the agents’ local expertise. We illustrate these ideas and discuss some of the qualitative properties of our proposed technique through analytical evaluation across several performance dimensions.

A decision-theoretic characterization of organizational influences

Despite a large body of research on integrating organizational concepts into cooperative multiagent systems, a formal understanding of how organizations can influence agents’ decisions remains elusive. This paper works toward such an understanding by beginning with a model of agent decision making based on decision-theoretic principles, and then examining the possible routes that organizational...

Organizational design principles and techniques for decision-theoretic agents

Recent research has shown how an organization can influence a decision-theoretic agent by replacing one or more of its model components (transition/reward functions, action/state spaces, etc.), and how each of these influences impacts the agent’s decision-making performance. This paper delves more precisely into exactly which parts of an agent’s model should be organizationally influenced, and ...

Unifying temporal and organizational scales in multiscale decision-making

In enterprise systems, making decisions is a complex task for agents at all levels of the organizational hierarchy. To calculate an optimal course of action, an agent has to include uncertainties and the anticipated decisions of other agents, recognizing that they also engage in a stochastic, game-theoretic reasoning process. Furthermore, higher-level agents seek to align the interests of their...

Structural Change and Homeostasis in Organizations: A Decision-Theoretic Approach

We present here a decision-theoretic framework for the analysis of organizational change under risk. An algorithm is demonstrated which identifies optimal change paths given uncertainty involving execution time, intervention cost, and payoffs resulting from particular structural configurations. An elaboration of the basic framework to accommodate external structural perturbations is shown, and ...

Using Decision-Theoretic Planning Agents in Market-Based Systems

This paper examines a number of theoretical and practical issues concerning the use of decision-theoretic planning to implement agents in market-based systems. The markets considered here result from the decomposition of complex, intra-organizationai resource allocation problems such as manufacturing scheduling. Although these problems can be formulated as monolithic optimization problems, they...
